How to Make Crusty Delicious Sourdough Bread

If you’re like me, you’ve looked through dozens of disappointing bread machine recipes in search of that perfect sourdough recipe. In my own experience, most bread machine recipes have been great, except when it comes to sourdough. Why is it so challenging to find just one good sourdough bread machine recipe? Come here, lean in close, and I’ll tell you a little secret: they’re not all bad. I have found a fantastic recipe for sourdough using a bread machine, and I’ll share it with you under one condition: You have to promise to share it with all of your friends, or at the very least make it for them whenever they ask-as long as they ask nicely, of course

Ingredients for starter:

1 1/2 teaspoons of yeast (bread machine yeast, or any quick active dry yeast will do)
4 cups of lukewarm water
3 cups of all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons of sugar

Ingredients for bread:

1/2 cup of water
3 cups of all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons of salt
1 teaspoon of yeast

Preparation instructions:

1. First of all, make the starter a week before you plan to make the bread. To make the starter:

a) Dissolve the yeast in the warm water.
b) Add the rest of the starter ingredients and mix it all together.
c) Lightly cover this mixture in a bowl and let it sit on your counter for a week. It’s done when it starts to smell sour and contains small bubbles.
d) Now, put it in the fridge until you’re ready to make the bread.

2. Place 1 cup of your starter into your bread machine, along with the rest of the ingredients for this bread recipe. If your machine has a specific order that it recommends for adding the ingredients, follow that guideline.

3. All machines may vary, but use whichever setting is equivalent to “Basic” or “Normal” setting. If your machine has a setting for crust, set it to “Light”.

4. Cooking time also varies by appliance. Your machine will let you know when it’s completed.

Remember, the process of selecting the correct cooking time and settings in general may depend upon the make of your machine. My personal experience has been that most machine’s provide you with an example sheet of recipes. I normally utilize this list for comparative purposes and then choose the settings accordingly.
